About the role
We are currently seeking an appropriately experienced Auslan Instructor to support both our Auslan in the Home program and our community Auslan courses. This is a 12 month fixed term contract.
Our Auslan in the Home program involves the provision of Auslan tuition to Deaf and hard of hearing clients and their families. This role will also ensure the provision of a range of high quality activities and Auslan learning opportunities to develop and enhance communication for the client and their families.
There is also an opportunity to support public Auslan classes, such as our popular Talking Hands courses, with opportunities for permanent staff to work on projects, develop additional content and deliver Deaf Awareness and corporate training sessions. This is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic instructors to join our passionate team and engage the wider community in learning Auslan.
The role will be based at one of our sites and some out of hours work may be required on weekends. There is some flexibility in hours and days of work for the right candidate.
You will have experience teaching Auslan at an introductory and beginner level and a passion for sharing your knowledge of communication strategies for working with Deaf and hard of hearing people. You will be a problem solver and able to work co-operatively with a broad range of people and services, and possess confidence to deliver lessons to the general public.
The role requires someone with;
- Fluency in Auslan and a lived experienced of Deafness;
- Have proven experience in Auslan teaching;
- Proven organisational and people skills;
- Honesty, flexibility, integrity and reliability;
- Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, staff and external stakeholders;
- Strong knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture and history;
- Are aware of linguistic minority communities, specifically Auslan, and the South Australian Deaf community;
- Hold a current DHS Working With Children check and NDIS Worker Screening, or preparedness to obtain;
- Possess a moderate proficiency in MS Office and using a range of IT and technology.
